While some chefs went for savory options like sausage and jalapeño kolaches, Barrett's choice leaned sweet — and sentimental.

He recalls childhood road trips across Texas, with kolaches from Buc-ee's always in reach. “I'd be in the backseat, watching thunderstorms roll in, peeling off little bites at a time, just enjoying the ride,” he says. Even now, he still makes a beeline for the pastry case when he stops in, drawn by the soft dough, bright fillings, and that signature crumbly topping.
