How Redbird Made It's Name in BBQ

Named in memory of a beloved brother and inspired by the redbirds that appeared after his passing, Redbird BBQ is more than just great food, it's a family tribute wrapped in smoke and soul. Kent Black chatted with the Redbird team at Texas Monthly BBQ Fest to hear the story behind the pit.

How Redbird Made It's Name in BBQ

At the 2024 Texas Monthly BBQ Fest, Kent Black had the opportunity to chat with one of Texas's most talked-about newcomers: Redbird BBQ in Port Neches, Texas. Known for their standout sides, perfectly smoked ribs, and house-made bread, Redbird is not only impressing crowds but also sharing a profound story.

Redbird was established in memory of founder Amir Jalali's step-brother Kody, called Koko, who passed away in 2018. Shortly after the family began noticing cardinals—often seen as symbols of loved ones lost—appearing frequently. This inspired the name "Redbird," serving as a tribute and a symbol of love, legacy, and something greater than any individual.

"I wanted to name [the restaurant] something bigger than myself," Amir shared. "I wanted to dedicate this to him."

This heartfelt dedication is evident in every dish they serve. From crispy coleslaw and ultra-tender brisket to thoughtful touches throughout the dining experience, Redbird emphasizes comfort, care, and community.

At Black's BBQ, we honor stories like Redbird's—where food, family, and purpose converge over the fire. If you're seeking a new name to support in Texas BBQ, keep an eye on Redbird.
